Let's Give Them Something To Blog About.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, kids of all ages (assuming you CAN and WANT to read this). TODAY...I went back to the gym.

This gym is much less eventful than the last. There were very few people and it is significantly smaller than my last gym. I think that's why I like it more.

Anyway, I was pretty nervous on my (very short) drive to the gym. It's been a while since I have gone and I was going to be doing something that was new to me.Well fairly new. My old trainer (remember, Diablo?)showed me how to do these workouts before but I had never done them on my own. GULP! I sucked it up and gave myself a pep talk. It mostly consisted of, "Grow up Mel. No one is going to be looking at you or laughing at you."

My new workout routine is much shorter than the routine I used to do but still tough. I use mostly free weights now and things like push ups and planks (HATE, HATE, HATE, did I mention HATE? Planks!). I do all this in a circuit. I like that because it gives me no time to talk myself into skipping one of the movements.

I finished my strength and did a little bit of cardio to close out the workout. I did 10 minutes at a brisk pace with an incline. I know what you are thinking, "Mel, you ran 5k, why only 10 minutes". It's probably due to laziness to be honest. I do want to start it slow. Last time, I dove right in and gave it my all and hit a plateau very quickly. I don't want to do that again. I don't want to wear myself out or get burnt out on the workout. I've decided that I am going to start at 10 minutes and add some time each week to my cardio. Also, cardio is not my main concern with this new workout. Strength is. My main focus is going to be on toning. We shall see how well this works. I am doing this as part of a "program" type thing. I joined the Nerd Fitness Academy for women. Based on some of the posts I have read on their forums, a lot of women have achieved AMAZING success.

Aside from working out, I am also doing more with my meals. Yesterday, I did my first Sunday Meal Prep. I cooked several meals and portioned them out so that I had lunch and dinner for the entire week. All I have to do each day is grab a container, warm it up, and enjoy!

Lunch today, Shrimp Lettuce Wraps.YUM!

Another Day. Another Dollar.

So far Tina and I are both doing well in the competition. She let me know this morning that she was down 1 pound and that would be $1 towards her winning. I congratulated her on her success. I also informed her that I was down 2 lbs, so it would be HER paying ME!

It's really great though, that we are both having success at this. I hope we both have GREAT success at the end of this competition, regardless of who the winner is. Really, how can we be upset at losing when that is the goal? HA! To win, we have to lose! I love it.

Here is Tina's drawing from yesterday. Looks like she felt much better!

The Biggest Loser! ~ Sister Edition

With my parent's vow renewal right around the corner, my sister and I decided to have a little friendly sisterly competition. Whoever can loose the most weight by March 25th is the winner. The loser has to pay the winner $1.00 for every pound that the winner lost.

I think this will be great incentive for both of us. Win or lose, hopefully we will both walk away from this a little healthier and slimmer.

Yesterday morning we weighed ourselves and sent each other a photo of the scale reading. The competition has begun!

Day 1 (Yesterday): I had a pretty good day. I started the day with a much needed cup of coffee. I had a 2 egg ham and cheese omelet for brunch and a small bowl of chili for dinner. I think I had a pretty successful day.
I'm not completely sure how Tina's day went but she did send me a couple of pictures to give me a small idea.

Today has started off good. I had a ham and egg scramble for breakfast. This afternoon I am going to Anytime Fitness to sign Matt and I up for a year membership. Ready to get back into working out!

I am really liking the idea of this competition with my sister. I think it will put a fun spin on us achieving our goals. And really..who wouldn't want to mop the floor with their sibling? It's only the second day, anyone (me) can win this!

I don't want my sister to not succeed in this, I just want to win ha! Good Luck, Tina! I'm bringing my A game...want a cheeseburger? <3

It hurts so good.

Monday I began my new workout routine thanks to the Nerd Fitness Academy. Yesterday, I felt pretty good. I woke up with no pain and no soreness, which is always a plus. I spent the day building legos with my son and relaxing.

Later in the evening, Matt and I began renovating our daughters room. I was fine in the beginning. Half way through we took a break for dinner. That is when I began feeling the soreness. After dinner, I went back to work on the rest of the room. That is when I began to feel the pain. I finally finished and got the kids into bed. I decided to lay in bed while I waited for my friend to show up (I was babysitting her daughter). I attempted to crawl into bed and could barely do it. My entire body hurt. Once I got into bed, I couldn't even move to get comfortable without hurting. Even the slightest movement hurt like all craziness.

This morning, I felt a little better. I was still sore but definitely not as bad as last night. I had my morning coffee and then began my workout. It was a little tougher today but I made it through. Afterwards, I took a shower and got dressed. Today it wasn't sweats or pajamas. I put on my jeans and a nice shirt. It made me realize something. I feel so much better mentally. I may not have seen any physical results yet but I just feel better about myself. So, despite the pain, I feel great to be working out again. Here is to Friday's workout *raises water bottle*.

The hardest part of this whole thing is the food. I want to indulge in all of the things that I shouldn't eat. I want donuts, cake, cookies, chocolate, ice-cream, all of those "not so healthy for you" foods. But even more so, I want to live a long and healthy life for my kids. I want to see them grow up. I want to be in their lives and see what kind of adults they will be. I want to meet my grand children and see them grow as well.
I know there is still plenty of time for that kind of talk. ;)

NERD ALERT! NERD ALERT!

A while back my husband found Nerd Fitness. It has a bunch of information about getting healthy and fit the right way. We learned about eating Paleo from that site. Friday, my husband sent me an email with a link from the site and asked me to read it. It was about a weight loss academy for women; Nerd Fitness Academy: Rebel Women. I figured I would go ahead and give it a read. The more I read, the more excited I got. My itch to workout came back (finally). It looked fun, so I signed up. I am officially a Rebel. It is a 6 week academy (you can do it longer if you want) that teaches you how to get healthy and fit by eating clean and toning (not bulking).

There are 2 different memberships that you can get.
The Apprentice Class ($59): You’ll receive the Philosophy course, the Nutrition course, the Exercise course, demonstrations of every exercise in HD, and every workout for every situation.  Over 50,000 words of content, 100+ exercise demonstrations, and 15 workout routines: enough to last you until the end of time.
The Master Class ($99): You’ll receive everything above, along with access to the Academy only Message Boards, recipes, the meal plans, the grocery shopping cheat sheet, all of the interviews, the 6-week “Get me ready quick” workout plans, Live Q&As, and the road warrior workout and nutrition plans.

I’m not going to tell you it will be easy - that you can keep “eating the same foods you love!” while not exercising and still achieve the results you want.
That would make me a liar, liar, pants on fire.
And If there’s one thing I hate, it’s pants on fire.
What I will tell you, is that if you give us your trust and effort for six weeks, I have no doubt in my mind that you see will significant progress and feel like you are moving rapidly down the path towards the life you’ve always wanted.
And not just physically. If you’re not healthy on the inside and happy, then no amount of weight loss can fix that.  So we’re going to focus on finding that balance for you. And we’re going to win. Because I don’t like losing.
In fact, I’m so confident, this course is going to come with a LIFETIME, 100% money back guarantee.
I opted for the Master Class. I like the idea of being involved with a community of other women (exclusively women) who are going through the same thing.  It also comes with a complete (clean) meal plan and grocery list. Which, I love. One of the hardest things for me was figuring out what was healthy to eat and how to cook it so it wasn't just plain old chicken breast every night. You gotta like what you are eating.

The women's academy is mostly run by Staci. Her story is very eye opening. It put a lot of myths to bed about lifting and bulking.

Now that I have shared that with you, I guess I will say...I'M BACK BABY!
I spent the weekend reading over the lessons and learning lots of new things. There is definitely a lot of useful information about getting healthy.
Today, I did my first workout. It wasn't "Diablo training session" brutal. But it was...well, a WORKout. I didn't want to say tough, but let's get real, if it's a good workout, it's going to be tough. I loved it. It made me realize that I miss working out. I spent over a year, going to the gym 5 days a week and felt great every day that I went. Then I fell back into old habits and started feeling miserable again. I've been sluggish, hungry, tired, bored and lazy. I don't like the way that felt. Even worse, my bra was getting tight again and I hate the way that feels even more!

I'm looking forward to my next workout!

Insert witty title here

Yesterday was a good day. A friend joined me for a nice long walk. Walking goes quicker when you have someone to talk to. We walked almost 3 miles. Eating has been going well. I have been logging all of my food and exercise. I need to get back into my workout routine. I have really been slacking in that department and I am kind of missing the gym. This weekend I am going to pick up a new pair of headphones and start back to the gym on Monday. I need to get back into a weight training routine. I would really love to start taking a kickboxing class. A real kickboxing class, not a cardio one.

I have been feeling really good about myself lately. My jeans are fitting much better and my energy levels are going back up. Increasing my eating has definitely helped. Guess my doctor really doesn't know what he is talking about.

A New Record.

I got the most amazing news this morning. I stepped on the scale and was down another 2 lbs. I am now at the the lowest I have been since I began my journey. I am only 3 lbs away from my mini goal of breaking 200. My weight has not been this low since before I got married (7 years ago). It feels so good! It is also helping me to continue making good choices.

Matt sent me a text and asked me what the plan for dinner was. I spent the entire day repainting our guest bathroom, so I did not make any dinner plans. He suggested we go to the Mexican Restaurant that we love. I told him to take the kids without me. I love Mexican food but I am not ready to tempt myself with it. Chips and Salsa sounds so good! But, I am going to pass.

42 lbs to go and I am there! I am so close, I can taste it  I can fit it!

Good Choices

I am down another pound this week. That makes me very happy. Seeing results always pushes me to strive to see more results.

Today I met a friend for lunch and was slightly nervous. Eating out is usually my downfall. I always give in and have the things that I shouldn't have and I get very enticed by the desserts. I was very proud of myself for the choices I made today with my eating. I decided beforehand that I would stick to a salad when I met my friend. The original plan was to go to a sandwich place that is in the building she works in. Instead, she recommended a nice place down by the Canal. Creation Cafe. The menu items looked SO good! I wanted so many different things; all bad things. I decided on a Waldorf Salad. Romaine lettuce, turkey, candied walnuts, dried cranberries, celery and blue cheese. Right before our food came out, I realized something. My salad had a lot of carbs in it thanks to those darn walnuts and cranberries. DANGIT! I decided to just eat around the cranberries and walnuts. Who likes those deliciously, tasty, sweet things anyway! ME, THAT'S WHO! I compromised. I ate a few of them (not even half). As much as it pains me, I ate around most of them. The salad was still pretty good. I passed on dessert, even though I really wanted some. I knew I had carbsmart icecream at home.

TIP: Instead of pouring your dressing over your salad, lightly dip your fork into the dressing before each bite. You eat much less dressing.

For dinner, I planned on making a roast. Correction, I DID make a roast. It was in the crockpot cooking and smelling good. At about 4:00pm Matt sent me a text:

Matt: Did you put the roast in the crockpot yet?
Me: Yup
Matt: Oh. I was gonna suggest we go to BJ's Brewhouse if you didn't.
Me: Oh.
Matt: Ok, let's just go anyway. Let the roast cook and we can have it tomorrow.
Me: Lol ok

So we ended up going out to eat, again! I looked over the menu and debated on Salmon or porkchops. Then I thought, "how hungry am I? Really?" I wasn't starving, so I ordered an appetizer instead. Thai Shrimp Lettuce Wraps. I definitely do not regret that decision. They were DELICIOUS! It felt good to not feel guilty for cleaning my plate. I passed on dessert again.

I did end up going slightly over my carb allowance today. I had 62g instead of my 50g. I am ok with that. It is still a lot better than the amount I was eating.

I am very happy about my choices today. The weekend will be the real challenge. I am hoping that I keep my determination and don't fall back into old habits.

Motivated, Motivated, Down Right Dedicated!

You check us out, you check us out....Smoooothhh!

I am happy to report that I am no longer at a stand still. I started back with Myfitnesspal (Melli907) on Monday and have stuck to it. I also took the dog for a 2.5 mile walk. I wanted to walk more but Savannah is getting old and got worn out faster than me, so I needed to take her home. This morning I hopped on the scale. To my (happy) surprise, I was 1 lb lighter. It doesn't sound like much but when you are working your buns off and not seeing anything, one pound can mean a lot. One pound can increase your motivation and your confidence in the things you are doing to loose weight. One pound or 20, it's a loss that I am VERY happy to report. This one pound is what I needed to keep me going. I was getting very discouraged that I stopped loosing, despite all of my efforts. Tomorrow I am meeting a friend for lunch, I plan on sticking to my low carb ways and making good choices.

I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again.

And, I fell off the wagon again!

The good news is, I am back on it.

I'll start with a recap. I lost 50lbs between last summer and the beginning of this spring. However, I began eating poorly again. I was still going to the gym but my food choices were pretty bad. I began gaining some of the weight back. I kicked my butt back into gear and I am back at that 50 lbs mark.

I am at a standstill, AGAIN! I keep going up and down between the same 3 lbs. I hate these plateaus that I keep hitting. No matter how little I eat and how much I work out, I'm not loosing right now. GR! I went to my doctor to talk to him to see if maybe the problem was that I wasn't eating enough. He didn't seem to care that I was only getting 300 calories a day (after deducting my calories burned from working out). He said, if you burn more than you take in, you will loose weight. Maybe he's never heard of starvation mode. At the moment, I am convinced that that is what the issue is.

Today I am getting back into using myfitnesspal. I am going to work on eating around 1200 - 1300 (But no more) calories but keeping my carb intake under 50g. My husband and I used this app on our phone 2 years ago and it worked great! we both lost 30 lbs while using it (without exercise).

Some days I feel like I am a work horse and someone is dangling a carrot in front of my face. It's right within my grasp but no matter how much i walk towards it, I just can't grab it! I feel like I am so close to my goal but I can't get over this hump! I am only 40 lbs away. I lost is pretty easily the first time, I know I can do it again.

Even though I am at a stand still again, I still feel better about myself. A few years ago, we went to Holiday World with my in-laws. Grandpa and I were taking the kids on the Zinga. I know some of these rides have weight limits, but I did not expect to have to get on a scale before getting on the ride. The four of us stepped onto the giant scale and we were told that we would have to split up. I was mortified! I know where the extra weight came from. ME! I didn't want to ride anything else that day so I stayed with my husband in the kiddie pool and watched my youngest play. That trip was a big eye opener. I did not ever want to have to feel like that again. This past summer, we went back to holiday world. I may not be skinny, but I am a lot smaller than I was back then. I felt much better about myself while I was there. I felt like I could actually enjoy the park with my kids. It couldn't have come at a better time. My youngest is such a little man now. He didn't want to spend the whole day in the kiddie area (although he did want to play there a little). He wanted to ride the big rides. He could, he was tall enough. I didn't go back on the zinga but I did ride a lot of other rides.  My husband has the same fear at these parks that I do. We are scared that we are just to big. I am proud of him though. He bit the bullet and rode some of rides with the kids. I had a blast this year and can't wait to go back (hopefully another 40 lbs lighter this time).

What in the World am I Doing?

I have let myself fall back into old habits. Old, bad habits. I worked extremely hard to loose the weight that I lost. It's time to get serious again and get back to it. NO EXCUSES!

I went to Wisconsin to visit my sister for a few days. I ate horribly. I can't think of a single healthy thing that I ate. Cream Puffs are definitely NOT paleo.

Katina and I hit the gym in full force. We did our cardio and then started a new workout. We did a few machines for upper body. We increased the weight on them so make it harder. After some upper body stuff we utilized one of the raquetball courts to do our new "challenge". When we entered the court, I realized there was no door handle on the inside of the door. We had no idea how we would get out if we closed it, so we decided to leave the door open. We began by sprinting to the other end of the court. This was followed by 20 jumping jacks. Then we side stepped back (quickly). We finished with 20 squats. We did the entire thing one more time. We ended our workout with 40 crunches.  It was a good workout.

We didn't stop there. After we took the kids to school, we walked a path that was up the road. It was a perfect day for it.

Today we had another fantastic workout. We began with some cardio, as usual. About 10 minutes into the cardio, I couldn't stand the loud girls behind me any longer. We had to move to the other side. After cardio, we did our 40 crunches and headed to the raquetball court again. This time I decided to shut Katina in the court so we could figure out how to get out. She figured it out pretty quick. We did the same routine as yesterday except we did an additional set. We felt great afterwards.

My eating has been right on track so far. I'm really happy about that. The key is keeping the same mindset everyday. No more of this "one day wont hurt me crap". It WILL hurt me! One day leads to two days and then before I know it, a week has gone by and I've gained again. Time to kick butt again. My own butt!

Tough Road.

We are still eating Paleo and we still like it. I have made several yummy things for us to eat, even desserts!
Banana Nut Muffins ( I added nuts to mine )
Apple Crisp with Coconut Whipped Cream I LOVE LOVE LOVE this one. It was so delicious! I love the Whipped Cream too. You can add cinnamon, honey, vanilla, even dark chocolate to it to change it up a bit.

I feel much better on this diet. I am waking up earlier in the mornings without feeling tired. I have been able to eat breakfast with my husband each morning before he goes to work because I am able to get out of bed earlier.

It does get hard when I am around other food that I used to eat that I can't eat during my 30 days. I was at a friends house and she made Chicken Enchiladas for dinner. They looked SO good, but I couldn't eat them.

Today, I am in a rut. I am not happy at all today. Even though I feel great, I am a tad put off today. I have gained 2-3 pounds in the last couple of days and I have no idea why. I have been eating very little carbs. The carbs I have been eating are natural (from fruit). Yesterday I logged my eating to see if I was eating to many Calories. I ate 1245 calories and burned 693 at the gym. Surely, I should be loosing weight since I do this every day. Right? This is normally the time that I would start being honest with myself and come clean about "cheating" with my eating. However, I honestly have not been cheating. I have been put to the test so many times and have always come out on top. I even made Snickerdoodles for the kids yesterday. My husband offered me one last night and as hard as it was, as bad as I wanted one, I said no and walked away. I am really hoping that our scales is messed up or that I am just gaining muscle faster than before (since I am eating so much protein now). Sigh....

My 29th birthday is on Saturday. A friend is taking me out tomorrow and my husband has arranged a family dinner outing for Saturday. The question is, do I loosen the strings and enjoy my Birthday or do I stick to my diet? Do I pass on my own birthday cake?

Marco. Paleo!

I know it has been awhile (again), since I have posted. But I finally have stuff to blog about, again.

Before the holidays I got down to 204 lbs from 242 lbs. After the holidays, I hit a bump and gained some of the weight back. Going into the new year I was at 213 lbs. I do NOT want to go backwards. I have worked way to hard to go back to where I was.

I am very happy to say that I am back in my normal gym routine and back down to 205 lbs.

On Sunday (January 27th) My husband sent me an article about a diet that he was interested in trying. I read the article and was interested myself. That night, we sat down and discussed it. We made the decision to try it for 30 days.

On Monday my husband and I began our 30 day trial of the Paleo Diet. I will admit, It was some what difficult during the first few days. Not because of the lack of eating (I get to eat plenty), but because of my body getting used to a healthier way of eating. At first, I was skeptical. I thought, "I'm not going to be able to eat anything on this diet". But I quickly learned that was not the case at all, and I began to have fun with it. There are things that I can't eat, but there are nice alternatives, especially if you aren't afraid of trying new and different foods.

I really enjoy cooking, and I get to do a lot of it with this diet. I get to eat bacon and eggs every morning for breakfast, that tastes much better than plain oatmeal. I have a salad and an apple for lunch (that is my choice because I am not very hungry after coming home from the gym but I have to eat something). If I feel hungry before dinner, I grab a handful of nuts or some fruit, however, I am rarely hungry between meals. For dinner, I get to have fun cooking. I started simple and made things that I already knew how to make like, Talapia, Lemon and Garlic Chicken, and Steaks. Then I looked up a few recipes and the fun began.

Friday night for dinner I made Chili. It looked very different (because of the lack of beans and noodles that I usually put in my chili), but it tasted good. For desert (yes, I can have dessert), I made a Honey-Almond Cake. It was delicious.

Saturday morning, I made pancakes! Banana almond pancakes, to be exact.  Saturday night I made Paleo Spagetti. Again, It was different, but tasted good.

I have 3 kids. My youngest is going through a picky eating phase, the middle child will try anything and my oldest is autistic and it can be hit or miss when it comes to food. Sometimes he likes food we think he will hate and hate food we think he will like. All 3 of my kids enjoyed some of these meals. My oldest did not eat the pancakes because of the texture of them (due to the bananas in them). Other than that, all the meals I have made so far, my kids have eaten and enjoyed.

We are on our 6th day of this diet and I have lost 8 lbs! My husband has lost 7 lbs! I am super thrilled. I have 45 days left until I have to buy my dress for my parents vow renewal ceremony. My goal is to loose at least 30 lbs by that time and another 10-20 lbs before the actual ceremony. I am pretty confident that I can do it!

A New Year. A New Me.

I'm back.
I fell off the blog wagon for a bit but I am working on posting more from now on.
Oh the down side, I will admit. I did gain a few pounds back. I am at 210 lbs right now. However, after coming clean to my husband about my "cheating" on my diet (and being honest with myself about it), I am ready to start again and finish the 2nd half of my journey to a healthier me.

This is where I am at right now.
My goal is to loose 40 more pounds. Who knows, maybe a little more once I get there.
My sister and I have been planning my parent's vow renewal that is coming up this June. I am hoping to work my butt off to loose as much weight as possible before then.

I had a training session today. My husband had already forewarned me last night that my trainer was going to work me out pretty hard. I was pretty nervous, but also looking forward to it. I needed to get my butt into gear and I knew my trainer was going to do just that. We did a little bit of everything today. A full body workout. Lunges, squats, abs, chest, back, all of it. I actually felt nauseous for the first time. I felt sick, but I felt good.

Briana suggested that I try eating vegan a couple days a week. She is going to send me a list of things that I can and can't eat. I'd like to try to eat vegan at least 3 times a week. We will see how that goes. I like eating raw veggies  so it might not be TOO hard. But, if loosing weight was easy, we would all be skinny.

Tomorrow, I am going back to the gym for more cardio. I can't wait for the snow to stop and the wind chill to go away so that we can start going on our family walks again.

The 2nd Half.

I am at my half way mark now. I have lost 40 pounds and have 40 more to go. Ideally, I would love to loose this 40 before June. That is plenty of time. If I get back to eating right, I should not have any problems getting there. As of right now, I'm at a stand still at 204.

Going to the gym is the easy part, it's changing my relationship with food that is hard. Have you ever noticed that food is like a best friend. It is there in times of sorrow and happiness. When there is a funeral, there is always food afterwards. When there is a celebration, there is always food. This is because food makes us feel good (even if it is temporary). I have to learn how to limit my friendship with food. Funny that I say that I have to "learn" to limit". I already know HOW to limit my food intake; eat less. I really just need to woman up and do it. Take a smaller slice of pie this holiday, and only 1 slice of pie. One serving (a real serving, not my idea of one) of dinner, lunch or breakfast. If I don't buckle down and change my eating habits, I might as well quit. That is NOT something I want to do. I am 6 months in, and let me tell you, I have never in my life worked this long and hard at my weight. My usual diet would last a week, if that. I am going to suck it up and do this!

I have mentioned before that I do interval cardio now. I alternate between walking 3 minutes and jogging 3 minutes. I do this for the entire 60 minutes. I tested myself once, towards the end of my cardio. I had 8 minutes left and it was at a jogging mark. I began jogging and I thought, "I wonder if I can jog for 5 minutes". Then I thought, "Hm, I wonder how long I can jog until I have to stop". I ended up jogging that last 8 minutes of my workout and I could have gone longer. My confidence went through the roof. It felt amazing to know that I could jog for that long. Gone are the days of running out of breath trying to keep up with my kids. Now are the days of running with them.

My trainer recently got a new client. My husband. His sessions are every Monday. Right now, he is in the stages of dreading it. I'm sure that will change with time (hopefully).
Speaking of my trainer, Diablo...
I had a training session last Tuesday. Usually we do chest workouts because that is what I work on every Tuesday. Really, it's because I hate the lunges and squats and all of the other crazy things Diablo makes me do when we do a leg workout. My plan was working great. Until Tuesday. He caught on to my scheme and decided we would do a leg workout that day (DAGNABBIT!!) We began with 3 sets of 15 at 195 lbs on the leg press. At first, I chuckled to myself, because I usually do 4 sets of 20 at 210 lbs. "This is going to be easy peasy", I thought. I THOUGHT wrong! After those 3 sets he changes the weight to 210 lbs and says, "Ok, you have 4 minutes to do 80 reps." Um.....WHAT? It was insane, but I did all 80 reps in 2.5 minutes. Sure it sounds great that I did them in almost half the time. But it didn't feel great at all! My legs were wobbly and I knew I was going to curse his name for the rest of the week. After the leg press he had me do 40 stationary lunges per leg. At that point I threatened to fire him (hehe). After the lunges he decided that he tortured me enough and we moved on to abs. At least the abs were bearable. Thanks to my wonderful leg workout, I could barely walk for the rest of the week. The pain was pretty intense. It didn't help that we went to Wisconsin to visit my sister for Thanksgiving and she lives up 2 flights of stairs.

Luckily, I am pain free today and ready to go back to the gym for some cardio. As for my trainer, he and I will talk about his actions at a later date (don't I wish it was that easy). :)

*FYI: I do not hate my trainer by any means. When I refer to him as Diablo, it is purely a joke. I am extremely grateful for all the help he has given me. I am very sore after our workouts, some more than others, I do know that it is a "good" hurt. It will all be is all worth it!

Image Update.

Well, I guess it is about time that I put up an updated picture.

BEFORE: 242 LBS               AFTER: 204 LBS

So Close!

It certainly has been a while. I suppose an update is in order. Here goes...

When does 2 minutes feel like 2 hours? When you are jogging. I started jogging during my cardio. I began with alternating 5 minutes of walking and 2 minutes of jogging.  It was definitely a challenge. It still is a bit difficult but I actually like it. Last week I decided to change it a little and lowered my walking to 3 minutes at a time. Once I began the jogging, the weight just starting falling off.
I am still working with my personal trainer and luckily the sessions have not been as painful as they used to be. I'm not sure if it's because my body is getting used to it and I'm getting stronger, or because he is slacking (I doubt he is slacking). I had a training session on my sons birthday. My trainer was such a nice guy and drove Mike around in his "race car". My son LOVES cars. He saw my trainers car one day (Camaro) and said, "Oo I wanna ride in that!" He loved every minute of that ride too! After my training session that day, my trainer set me a mini goal. My goal is to get to 199lbs. I am really working hard to reach that point. It has been at least 5 years since I have been under 200 lbs and I am ready to get back under it. I am very happy to say that as of today, I am at 204 lbs. I cannot believe how fast this is actually going. At the beginning I would always think, I don't want to wait 6 months or a year to be that weight. But now, 5 months in, it feels like the time is going by so quickly. If I keep it up, I might actually be able to stop wearing a shirt at the beach this summer. Even better, I might be able to wear shorts!
I have another training session this week since last weeks session was free. I actually look forward to going to the gym during the week. It relieves stress when I'm stressed out and allows me to think really clearly while I am walking and jogging. I love the way I feel and the way I am starting to look. My clothes are getting bigger and that is a very, very great feeling. I do not have a single pair of pants that fit me. This time it is because they are all to big.
Our oldest son is turning 16 on November 3rd. We are having a huge party for him. We are inviting all of our family from out of town. While I know that the party is for him, it will feel really good to see their reactions when they see my change. I have not seen most of them since I dropped all the weight.

Run Forest, Run!

I cannot believe that it has been 18 days since my last update. I assure you, it is not because I quit. I am still working hard to become healthy. I have not spent much time at my computer at all lately.

It has been pretty uneventful at the gym the last couple of weeks. This week was really the only one worth writing about.

Last Friday (the 24th) A friend of mine decided that she would come work out with me since she was off from work. We went in and began with 10 minutes on the stair master. We followed that with 50 minutes on the treadmill. I did my usual walk on the treadmill, 3.2 mph and a 7.0 incline, however, I decided to add something. I decided that I would jog the last 3 minutes of my cardio. When the time came, I decreased my incline to 0.0 and increased my speed to 4.5 mph. I jogged my little heart out. I made it the full 3 minutes and felt pretty darn good about it. 3 minutes may not sound like much to some people, but it was a great accomplishment for me. After that day, I decided that it was time for me to begin jogging. We finished up with a great leg workout and headed home.

On Monday, my friend 'M' decided that she would join me at the gym.  We began with 10 minutes on the stair master and followed it up with 30 minutes on the treadmill.  I started with my usual walk. After 5 minutes and changed the speed and incline and jogged for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, I changed the settings back and did my usual walk to cool down (7.0 incline and 3.2 mph). I alternated the walking and jogging for the entire 30 minutes. It was a lot harder than I anticipated, but I pushed on and made it through.

After the cardio, we headed downstairs to do a chest workout. We finished up and headed home.

Tuesday, 'M' was really feeling it. She was extremely sore, but she did not let it stop her. We skipped the stair master but made up for it with an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill. Again, I alternated jogging and walking every 2 and 5 minutes. Again, I completed the entire 40 minutes that way. After cardio we did a back workout.

Wednesday, 'M' was back for more! We headed up stairs and began our cardio. I jogged and walked the same as I had the rest of the week. It was tough but I had no plans to quit. When we hit the 40 minute mark 'M' looked at me with a smile and said, "50". Heck yea! So, we went for 10 more minutes and then headed down the stairs to do our last day of strength training. We worked on legs.

Today, I overslept and began rushing around to get ready. I have to be at the gym by a certain time so that I can get a complete workout in and have time to take my son home to get him ready for school. I sent M a text letting her know that I was running late. She replied letting me know that something had come up that morning. I asked her if she wanted to skip gym, she said she didn't plan on skipping. So, I had breakfast, picked her up, and we headed back to the gym.

It was just cardio today. We walked on the treadmills and then headed down to talk to the manager about possible membership options for 'M'. He was a nice guy, but we are probably just going to get a quest pass added to my membership (hehe).

It was really nice having someone with me while I worked out. Even though I had over come my fears of going alone and do not mind going alone, it was really nice having someone to talk to during my time at the gym.

'M' did great! I cannot praise her enough. The first couple of weeks at the gym are always the hardest and she is half way through it. It really does take a lot of strength to keep going back, and she kept coming back! I really hope that we can work something out so that she can continue to come with me.

Feeling Fantastic!

Another week has past and again, I forgot to update my blog. I'm getting really good at forgetting about it. Rest assured, I have not been forgetting about the gym and my goal. Since I hit my 20 pound mark, I have lost 4 more pounds I am really excited about that. The closer I get to my goal, the happier I get. Last weekend, I was able to fit into a smaller pant size. I was also able to wear some of my cotton shirts that shrunk in the dryer (the same week that I bought them).

I went back to the gym on Monday, after a week off. I tell you what, I felt it! I'll be damned if I'm going to miss a week of gym time again. I felt like I had never been to the gym a day in my life. I started with my cardio workout. I started with 10 minutes on the Stair Master. I'm not going to sugar coat it; I wanted to die!  I finished my cardio with 50 minutes on the treadmill.

On Wednesday, I had a training session. I got to the gym later than I planned so I started with 40 minutes on the treadmill. I figured that I could do my 10 minutes on the Stair Master after my training session. We did a leg workout. While I was on the leg press, he got curious and wanted to see how much I could actually lift with my legs. We got to 345 lbs before we had to move on (we only have 30 minutes per session), but he is convinced that I could do more. Hopefully, he won't want to find out how much more. After my session, I headed to the dreaded Stair Master. About 3 minutes into it, I felt extremely nauseous. I got down and sat on the stairs for a couple of minutes to see if the feeling would pass. I wasn't feeling any better after 5 minutes, so I headed home. If I was going to get sick, I didn't want to do it at the gym.

I went back again on Thursday. The entire way to the gym, I was talking myself out of doing the Stair Master. I was attempting to convince myself that I just wasn't ready to add it to my workout. I had also decided that I wouldn't mention it to my trainer. He didn't need to know. Besides, I didn't want him to tell me to do it anyway. That was the plan anyway. I saw my trainer as soon as I walked into the gym. What was the first thing I did? I told him about the damn Stair Master. What did he say? "Do it before your workout". I have no idea why I opened my big mouth! Why couldn't I just say hi and keep on walking? Honestly, I think I did it because part of me knew that I needed to get back on that Stair Master. It was my way of making sure that I did it anyway. So, after I put my stuff in my locker, I climbed on the Stair Master and did my 10 minutes. Then, I did 50 minutes on the treadmill and my chest workout. When I finished my entire workout, I looked like someone had dumped a bucket of water over my head. I was sweating so hard that my pony tail was soaked. Despite the sweat, I realized. What I did at the gym that day (including the Stair Master) wasn't all that bad.

Friday I went back again to complete my back workout. I got on the Stair Master with no problems and then followed it with the treadmill.

I don't hate the Stair Master as much as I did when my trainer first mentioned it. Don't get me wrong, it is tough. 10 minutes may not sound like much but it sure does feel like an eternity. The time did seem to go by quicker each day. I'm actually looking forward to going back tomorrow.

For You

Today I was talking to an old hometown friend about her recent gym membership. I am very proud of her for beginning her journey. I have a lot of faith in her and I hope she achieves great success!

I for one know how expensive gym memberships and personal trainers can be. I just happen to have gotten lucky by finding a gym that was willing to wave enrollment fees to allow us to join. When I first signed up, I thought that Personal Trainers were a waist of money. Of course, I had nothing to base this off of. After a free training assessment, I was in love with Personal Training. I wanted one! I just didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. I tried going back to the gym on my own but failed. I didn't know what I was doing and it discouraged me. Some people just need someone to push them and help them with working out. My husband managed to talk the manager into waving the trainer fee and lower the monthly cost. I only see my trainer twice a month but he made very sure that I had a complete workout plan. I remember what it was like walking into the gym that first day. I was terrified, nervous, self conscious and paranoid. Once I got my trainer and my workout plan, I returned with much more confidence.

Now, I am not saying that a trainer is the key to success. I just wanted to give credit to my trainer. Without his help, I would be 20 pounds heavier and probably still gaining. I do think that if you have a plan to follow, you are more likely to succeed. You don't waste time guessing what machines to use and what workouts to do.

In this post I am going to post my entire workout routine. It is 5 days worth. I will also be including little tips and additional info that my trainer has told me. Think of it as using my trainer for free!

"I will not say I can't do it. I will always try it."

Let's start with cardio. When I first began, I was told that I needed to do at least 3 hours of cardio (that increases your heart rate) a week. I could spread it out however I wanted to as long as I completed at least 3 hours of cardio within 7 days. There is no specific speed or incline that you need to use, duration is greater than speed. You can do any type of cardio that you choose. running, swimming, jumping jacks, bike riding, or even take an aerobics class. I had made up my mind that I would complete 5 hours of cardio a week. I began by doing 30 minutes of walking in the morning and 30 in the evening. After just a couple of weeks, I was walking for a full 60 minutes every morning. Once you feel that your body is getting used to the pace that you are walking (probably about 2-3 weeks in) try increasing your speed or your incline of your cardio. This does not need to be a huge change. For example. I walked at a 3.0 pace for several weeks. Once my body began to get used to it, I bumped the speed up to 3.2 mph. It does not sound like much, but you will feel it. You will know that it is time for an increase when it becomes easy.
My cardio: 60 minutes on Treadmill at 3.2 mph and 7.0 incline (I have built this up over 3 months @ 5 days a week)

On to Strength. Including strength workouts into your routine will help tone your body while you lose weight. It helps in the prevention of sagging skin that may result from weight loss. Strength training builds muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat does.  This workout will not bulk you up. You will not end up looking like Rocky. It will help you build a small amount of muscle and to tone your body while you slim it. Ideally, you want to gain around 10 pounds of muscle. Do not let the word 'gain' throw you off. This is not 10 pounds that you will be unhappy with. This is 10 pounds that will show by the definition in your arms or in your legs. It will be what makes you look nice and tone. By building this muscle, you will increase the amount of calories that you burn, not only while working out, but throughout the course of the day.
When you do these workouts, don't get afraid that you will bulk up and get beefy.  If your goal is to bulk up, you focus on high weight, low rep sets. To tone, you do lower weight, higher rep sets.
Each muscle group is broken up into different days. With this workout each muscle group will have a full 7 days to rest before working that group again.

Reps: The number of times you complete the movement of the exercise. You want to keep this number between 12-15
Sets: The number of times you complete your reps. You want to keep this around 3-4
For example: 15 push ups, rest 30 seconds, 15 push ups, rest 30 seconds, 15 push ups. This would be 3 sets of 15.
Example1 Bulking: Bench Press 300 lbs x 6-8 x 3
Example2 Toning: Bench Press 60 lbs x 12-15 x3

The workout below is the workout that that I have been doing for the last 3 months. Each workout has a link that will show you a picture of a machine goes with the workout. Every gym is different and your gym's equipment may not look exactly as the image. If you cannot locate a machine that looks like the images, try matching up the names.

Monday: 60 minutes of cardio

                 Chest Press: 3 x 15
                 Pectoral Fly: 3 x 15

                  Leg Extention: 3 x 15
                  Leg Press: 4 x 15
Friday: 60 minutes of cardio
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Rest

 * The Pectoral Fly and the Rear Fly Machines look very similar, some machines allow you to use the same machine for both workouts. Be sure to rest for 30 seconds in between each set.*

To figure out which weight is best for you test different amounts. You don't want it to be easy, but you don't want to hurt yourself either. Ideally, you should be able to complete a full set, but not easily. Once you get to your last 4-5 reps, they should require a little bit of a struggle to finish. If you can easily complete a set, increase the weight one block at time (the machines weights differ from 5-15 pound increments). If you are struggling to complete 8-10 reps, decrease the weight one block at a time.

Be sure to read the instructions on the machine carefully and ask a staff member for help if needed. Some machines may require you to adjust the seats or grips. Adjust them accordingly.

Also, remember that you can break up your cardio however you choose.
